How to Choose the Right Dog Groomer

America's Country Store • May 20, 2021

Does your back hurt after leaning over the bathtub washing your dog? Does it take hours, or days, to finish trimming your dog's hair? Although you might like to save money, it might be a better idea to have your dog professionally groomed. Doing so will help save you time and energy while making your furry friend look and feel great.

After bringing your dog home and getting it acclimated to the family and surroundings, it's time to think about dog grooming. It is normally not recommended to start grooming services before 12 weeks of age. The first grooming appointment usually gets the dog introduced to all of the services including getting a bath, blow-drying, nail clipping, and a puppy trim. The first visit does not take very long as the puppy may have a short attention span.

What's Normally Included with Dog Grooming Services?

A professional dog grooming service first consists of the dog being brushed. During this step, the groomer will get out any mats in the fur, making it easier to lather the shampoo during washing. The groomer will then lather the dog with shampoo, giving the dog a nice scrub. They will clean the dog's ear, removing any buildup. During this step, the groomer will be able to determine if there are any signs of infection and will relay this information when you come to pick up the dog.

The dog will be dried either by air-drying or blow-drying and then trimming will begin all over, including above the dog's eyes, tips of the ears, and bottom of the feet. Their nails will be trimmed to a comfortable length. In some cases, groomers may brush your dog's teeth and provide anal gland expression services.

The time it takes to complete dog grooming services depends on the size of the dog, the breed, and the services being completed. Small services like nail trims should only take about 10-15 minutes. Full grooming, bath to trimming, may take 3-4 hours. How often a grooming session is recommended depends on the breed, the type of coat, and the length of the dog's hair. Typically, it is recommended to have your dog groomed every 4-6 weeks to avoid getting matted and to keep the dog clean and healthy. However, some dogs can go longer between grooming sessions.

Choosing A Groomer

Finding the right dog groomer for your dog may be as difficult as finding the right hairdresser for yourself. Since they will be with the groomer for a couple of hours, you'll want to find someone you can trust. One of the best ways to find a groomer is to ask for recommendations. Your family and friends can probably provide the names of the groomers they use which can help narrow down your search. Once you have some names, check out reviews online.

The next step is asking questions of the groomer you choose. This may include asking about their experience, training, certifications, what breeds they have experience with, their prices, hours, and more. You can visit their grooming salon ahead of time to check out the place and ask more questions. A reputable groomer will welcome you to take a tour. Ask about the grooming fees as this may be different for every breed.

Benefits of Doggy Day Care
December 5, 2019
Many dog owners will simply use doggy daycare as a solution to have care for their dog while they are at work. However, the benefits of doggy daycare are more than just dog sitting. Doggy day care can give your dog the attention they need while you are away, while also socializing with other dogs! Even if you are not planning on traveling, enrolling your dog to our dog daycare can help with training for puppies, and make your pet feel more comfortable in new settings or around other animals. You don't need to have a packed schedule to inquire about our dog boarding or dog daycare options, as many owners in the Bryan, TX and College Station, TX areas utilize our services solely to help train their dogs. Below are 5 reasons why you should consider sending your dog to doggy daycare. 1. Socialization Doggy daycare can help train your dog on how to properly interact and socialize with other dogs. This can help your dog remain calm in future situations of meeting and interacting with new dogs. 2. Exercise It is extremely important to your dog’s overall health they get enough exercise and playtime. Not only will playtime make your dog happier, but it can also prevent your dog from becoming overweight and other health issues. Dog daycare will also help your dog release energy, so your dog is more calm and relaxed after a long day at work. 3. Routine Taking your dog to doggy daycare often will provide your dog with a routine of playtime, walks, and bathroom time they can get comfortable with. Like many other animals, dogs thrive off routine and are creatures of habit. Dog daycare provides an organized schedule of activities for your dog. 4. Reduces Separation Anxiety Many dogs suffer from separation anxiety when their owners are out of the house. Sometimes separation anxiety can cause dogs to use the bathroom in the house, engage in destructive behavior, or bark excessively. Sending your dog to doggy daycare will allow your dog to get social with other dogs and the staff to prevent loneliness. 5. Safety Leaving your dog home alone can be nerve-wracking, especially if you have a new puppy. You don’t want your dog to get into a dangerous situation and get hurt while you are away. You also don’t want to leave your dog crated all day while you are at work. Doggy daycare provides constant supervision of your dog throughout the day to prevent any issues or injuries. If you have a busy schedule and find yourself struggling to find the time to give your dog the attention they deserve, it may be time to consider doggy daycare. If you are a dog owner in College Station or Bryan, TX, count on America’s Country Store and Pet Resort for dog daycare services. Tips for First Time Dog Owners
November 5, 2019
Adopting your first dog can be both a stressful and exciting time. You are welcoming a new member into your family, but you may be lost on your first steps to prepare for this new member. America’s Country Store and Pet Resort is here to give first-time dog owners tips on training and caring for your new furry friend. Food & Supplies The first thing you need to do to prepare for your new pet is to get supplies. Make sure you buy plenty of toys, a dog bed, leash, collar, and bowls for food. Different breeds and ages of dogs have different nutritional requirements. Before bringing your furry friend home, be sure to consult with a veterinarian or staff where you adopted your dog about your dog’s dietary needs and restrictions. Once you decide on a brand of food that’s best for your pup, stock up before bringing your new dog home! Prepare Your Home Unless you are adopting an older dog who had a previous owner, your new dog will most likely not be housetrained. You need to prepare your home for accidents. Avoid letting your dog have free reign of the whole house right away. Try to create a gated space or separate room for your dog. This avoids overwhelming your new dog and allows them to adjust to their new surroundings. In this space, it may be a good idea to layout potty pads in case your dog has an accident. Remove any valuables or items that may be damaged from your dog chewing on them. Start Training Proper training is essential for all dogs. It is important to discourage unwanted behaviors by offering alternative options. For example, if your dog is chewing your shoe, take away the shoe and put a toy in their mouth instead. If your dog used the bathroom inside, take your dog outside to show them that’s where they should be going. You should also reward good behavior with praise and treats. It is also important to train your dog to be comfortable in their crate, so when you can’t supervise your dog, you can put them in their crate and avoid any accidents. It also can be beneficial to take your dog to dog daycare or classes if you work during the day, want help with training, or want to get your dog comfortable being around other dogs. Develop a Routine Coming up with a daily routine can help your dog adjust to their new household. It is important to feed your dog, take your dog on walks or outside, and crate your dog around the same time every day. This helps your dog get settled and aids in potty and crate training. Remember to be patient with your new pup! They are adjusting to being in a new environment just like you’re adjusting to having a new pet. Give your dog time to settle in and adjust. When it comes to setting your new dog up for success, America’s Country Store and Pet Resort has you covered. Not only do we offer all the pet supplies you’ll need for your new furry friend, but we also offer dog grooming , dog daycare , and dog boarding . Let us relieve some of the stress of being a dog-owner and trust us with your grooming, training, and boarding needs.
